About us

Emberion focuses on design and productisation of high-performance optoelectronics based on graphene, other nanomaterials and CMOS integrated circuits. In addition to its product business, Emberion engages in technology licensing and can deliver integrated end products.

Our R&D sites are situated in Cambridge, UK, and Espoo, Finland with 20 world-leading experts. We are a member of the European Graphene Flagship program.

Emberion is a spin-out from Nokia’s R&D in Finland and UK based on private equity funding and spin-out expertise from VersoVentures and co-founded with Emberion employees.

Our team

Emberion’s core is a team of ~20 experienced R&D and business professionals with decades of industrial experience. Our competences include the full range of technologies needed for photodetector module development – nanomaterials, microelectronics, printed electronics, measurement technologies, sensors, optics, photonics, CMOS and MEMS design, electronics packaging, embedded software, SW algorithms and system integration.

The team worked together for eight years leading Nokia’s research into nanomaterials, flexible electronics and graphene and were instrumental in creating the famous Morph concept in 2008.

Our current team consists of a number of the founders of EU Graphene Flagship program. Our CEO, Dr Tapani Ryhänen, is a member of the Flagship Scientific Advisory Council. The council consists of top scientific and technological experts in the field including four Nobel laureates.

Our team has created more than 300 patent applications in related technologies and has numerous publications in high-impact scientific journals.
